1778 The Earl of Seaforth raised the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot.
1786 Re-numbered the 72nd (Highland) Regiment of Foot.
1793 A second battalion is raised again as the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot.
1794 This battalion is augmented by a second battalion, the Ross-shire Buffs.
1804 A second battalion of the 72nd is raised
1809 The battalions lose their Highland status and cease to wear the kilt.
1814 The second battalion, known as the 78th is disbanded.
1823 The 72nd are re-titled the Duke of Albany’s Own Highlanders.
1881 The 72nd, Duke of Albany’s Own Highlanders and the Ross-shire Buffs are amalgamated to form the 1st and 2nd battalions the Seaforth Highlanders.
1914-1918 The Regiment swelled to 18 battalions.
1948 1st and 2nd battalions amalgamated.
1961 Seaforth Highlanders and Queens Own Cameron Highlanders amalgamated to form the Queens Own Highlanders.
1994 Queens Own Highlanders, (Seaforth & Cameron’s), amalgamate with the Gordon Highlanders to become the Highlanders.
2006 The Highlanders become the 4th battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
