Highland Dancing

For Dancing Queries
Highland dancing is a tradition dating back many hundreds of years with most dances depicting or celebrating an event in Scotland's history. Dancers perform a set pattern of steps to each tune with almost all of the steps being up on the toes or balls of the foot. It is a very vigorous and energetic dance style with the emphasis on strength, stamina and technique.
The Seaforth Highlanders Regimental Association Pipe Band reflected Regimental tradition in having their own Highland dancers from their inception in 1961. This tradition gradually died out but was revived in 2005 when Suzanne McKenzie, joined the band as our Highland dance teacher.
Classes rapidly outgrew the bands practice time and moved to the Village Hall in Hathern, just outside Loughborough. Within a short space of time the band was once again enhanced by the rapid footwork and dynamic displays of the Highland dancers.
The class welcomes dancers of any age, gender or ability. Members are currently aged from four years up to forty plus. Highland dancing is a very energetic and technical discipline and a great way of keeping fit! Once dancers reach performance standard they are provided with their costume of kilt, blouse, velvet waistcoat and hose. Dancers normally provide their own shoes although these can be ordered via the class.
The dancers wear a variety of tartans but predominantly Modern Dress McKenzie which co-ordinates beautifully with the bands kilts.
We perform a variety of mainly traditional dances including the Highland Fling and the ever popular Sword Dance.

Practices are held on Thursday and Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm and  cost £1.50 per session which pays for hire of the hall. To enquire about becoming a dancer or to book the dancers for your event please call Suzanne McKenzie on: 01509 673371 or email her at
